Joe Louis Walker (Festival de Jazz du Parc Floral - 27/06/09)

Si Joe Louis Walker n’est pas originaire du Mississippi, du Texas ou de Chicago, ce natif de San Francisco a largement contribué à donner un nouveau souffle au blues.

If Joe Louis Walker is not born in Mississippi, Texas or Chicago, this native from San Francisco widely contributed to give a new breath to the blues.

Après avoir fait ses classes auprès des plus grands (Lightnin’ Hopkins, Earl Hooker, Michael Bloomfield…), Joe Louis Walker a longtemps parcouru des chemins de traverse avant de trouver son salut dans le gospel, jusqu’à ce que l’appel du blues se fasse à nouveau entendre au milieu des années 1980. Depuis, Joe Louis Walker a gravi les échelons de la hiérarchie du blues.

Having made his classes with the best bluesmen (Lightnin' Hopkins, Earl Hooker, Michael Bloomfield...), Joe Louis Walker went through side ways for a long time, before finding his salute in the gospel, until he heard once again the call of the blues in the middle of 1980s. Since, Joe Louis Walker climbed the hierarchy of the blues.

Né au Cameroun, loin des champs de coton qui ont peaufiné le style de ses lointains ancêtres, ce maître de l’Afro-blues est tombé sous le charme de la note bleue à l’adolescence en découvrant la musique de John Lee Hooker.

Born in Cameroun, far away from the cotton fields where his distant ancestors created the blues, this master of the Afro-blues fell under the charm of the "blue" note when he was a teenager while discovering the music of John Lee Hooker.

Après des débuts de percussionniste, c’est en tant que chanteur et guitariste qu’il s’est fait un nom en Europe comme aux États-Unis en proposant une synthèse entre ses racines africaines et ses influences blues, chantée en Bamiléké, sa langue maternelle.

Even if he began as a percussionist, it is as a singer and guitarist that he became famous in Europe, as well as in the United States by proposing a synthesis between its African roots and its influences in blues music, sung in Bamiléké, his mother tongue.

Jeremy PELT (Sunside - 16/06/09)

It is my great pleasure to introduce one more time Jeremy Pelt. I first discovered his works with his band Wired « Shock Value: Live at Smoke », an exploration of the style Miles Davis generated with « Live at the Fillmore East ».

I loved that album: his music is like a narcotic. One of my favourite album. Additionnaly, they recorded this live performance at the Smoke Jazz Club, on Upper West Side NY; a place I used to go very often when I was living in New York.

Did I also mention that I attended Gerald Cleaver's concert (featuring Jeremy Pelt) at Duc des Lombards in March 2009. Click here to look at the previous article.

With the album « November », Pelt returns to a fully acoustic format. At the Sunside Jazz Club, he played brilliantly, with warmth and depth. A musical and listening experience from beginning to end. His trumpet was sweet, harmonies and pulse were there, with Gerald Cleaver on drums and Dwayne Bruno on bass. On piano, Danny Grissett, and one of the finest tenor saxophonist JD Allen.

Review of « November » (Downbeat)

After several years of embellishing his music with electric keyboards, guitar and sound effects, Jeremy Pelt returns with a scintillating new disc that proves that acoustic instrumentation can be as electrifying. The fireworks ignite from Pelt's trumpet improvisations, which at times crackle with the intensity of classic Freddie Hubbard. Pelt shares the frontline with tenor saxophonist J.D. Allen, who also wields a flinty sensation when it comes to delivering poignant improvisations. Powerhouse drummer Gerald Cleaver and bassist Dwayne Burno ignite a combustive drive, and Danny Grissett offers his percussive piano accompaniment.

Pyrotechnics alone don't necessarily make absorbing music. Pelt's deft compositions make November a rewarding disc that invites repeated listens. They're steeped in modern post-bop, but also evoke a cinematic narrative akin to Wayne Shorter or Bobby Hutcherson. Pelt's no mere throwback musician, though. His mixture of turbulent rhythms and careening melodicism on "Avatar" or the smoldering fire he musters on "Rosalie"- check out his superb pithy duet with Grissett- are firmly rooted in the now.

The cohesive energy of Pelt's new outfit also contributes to this date's lasting impression. In Allen, he's found the ideal match for vivacious improvisations, best illustrated on "Phoenix", a blistering modern bop romp on which Allen and Pelt incessantly exchange sparkling asides. Cleaver and Burno give the rhythm section an urgency throughout most of the date, then recoil admirably on the more reflective compositions such as "Clairvoyant" without sacrificing rhythmic intensity or ingenuity.

Stephane Huchard: African Tribute to Art Blakey (Festival du Parc Floral - 13/06/09)

L' une des sections rythmiques les plus intéressantes, imaginatives et innovantes que j'ai pu écouter en concert. Et donc un projet que j'affectionne tout particulièrement. Celui du batteur français Stéphane Huchard.

One of the most interesting, imaginative and innovative rythm section I have ever heard. And a project that I do love. The one from the french drummer Stéphane Huchard.

Une formation qui s'apparente à celle des Jazz Messengers: Pierre de Bethmann au piano, Alexandre Tassel au bugle, Sylvain Beuf au saxophone, Diego Imbert à la contrebasse. Deux talentueux percussionnistes de renom originaires du Mali et de la Côte d'Ivoire, Baba Sissoko (talking drum ou tama) et Thomas Gueï (djembé), se sont joints à la formation afin de revisiter et d'africaniser une partie du répertoire de Blakey.

A band that is close to the one from the Jazz Messengers: Pierre de Bethman on piano, Alexandre Tassel on trumpet, Sylvain Beuf on saxophone, Diego Imbert on bass. Two talented and well-known percussionists from Mali and Ivory Coast: Baba Sissoko (talking drum or tama) and Thomas Gueï (djembé), who joined the band to revisit and make the music closer to african music and roots.

Le choix des compositions privilégie Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan et Cedar Walton. Des morceaux revisités d'où jaillit le rythme, intense et pur donnant naissance à un subtil mélange de hard bop et d'afro jazz. Un hommage tout naturel pour ce grand musicien et fédérateur qu'était Art Blakey et au lien subtil qui existe entre deux cultures: Africaine et Américaine.

Among the compositions, Stephane Huchard has chosen music from Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan and Cedar Walton. You will be surprised by the mixture of jazz standard and intense and pure african rythm. A tribute to this great musician and the existing link between two cultures: African and American.

Wasis Diop (Festival du Parc Floral - 13/06/09)

Week end dédié à l'Afrique au Festival de Jazz du Parc Floral avec le musicien sénégalais Wasis Diop, ancien membre fondateur du West African Cosmos, considéré comme l'un des premiers groupe de rock africain.

A cette occasion, Wasis Diop a présenté son dernier album acoustique "Judu Bek", entre les musiques de films, l'Opéra du Sahel pour lequel il a sillonné l'Afrique pendant trois an, et tous les projets qui l'ont mené aux quatre coins de la terre.

Un live étonnant entre accordéon, guitare électrique, voix et instruments traditionnel du Sénégal. Un projet raffiné et personnel aux mélodies délicates. "Judu Bek" est disponible depuis le le 19 mai 2009.

Comme il le dit lui-même, "Dans cette vie, rien n’est statique... Le seul danger est de ne pas s'adapter, de ne pas voyager, de rester au même endroit, musicalement ou spirituellement. Notre réponse en tant que musiciens est d’aller de l’avant."

This week end is dedicated to Africa with the musician Wasis Diop from Senegal, previous member and founder of the band West African Cosmos, considered as one of the first band of african rock.

Wasis Diop presented his new album "Judu Bek", composed with a large acoustic touch: in between sound tracks realisations, realisation of Opera of Sahel which for he has been furrowing Africa for 3 years, and all the projects he was leading at the four corners of the earth.

An amazing live between accordion, electric guitar, traditionnal voices and instruments of Senegal.

As he says "In this life, nothing is static … The only danger is to not adapt, to not travel, to stay in one spot, musically or spiritually. Our response as musicians must be to go forward.”

Programme du Festival de Jazz du Parc Floral 2009

Le programme du Festival du Parc Floral 2009 est désormais connu, et se tiendra du 6 juin au 26 juillet 2009 !

Chaque week-end sera l'occasion de découvrir un nouveau territoire, un nouvel horizon musical. Autant d'espaces qui permettront de multiplier les croisements et rencontres musicales. Pour la modique somme de 5 euros pour l'entrée dans le parc, les concerts sont gratuits !
